Each year, Central Florida’s top tuna fisherman compete against one another in hopes of capturing the Top Boat title by accumulating the largest 3 tuna aggregate weight. Hundreds of spectators attend the “weigh in” to see the giant yellowfin tuna wheeled to the stage and to be a part of the energy and excitement. Each year spectators walk away with handfuls of giveaways during Capt. Ed’s infamous brain teasers and thousands of dollars in raffle items donated by the generous sponsors of this event. Garmin recently debuted the latest additions to their line of GPSMAP chartplotters and plotter/sonar combo units—the GPSMAP 742 and 942 touchscreen chartplotters, and the GPSMAP 1042xsv and 1242xsv keyed chartplotter. Available in a range of sizes from 7”-12” units, with built-in sonar options, the concept behind Garmin’s new units is to offer solutions to every boat owner, bringing premium features and the latest in chartplotting technology to budget-conscious customers.
The GPSMAP 742/942 series offers 7” and 9” sunlight-readable touchscreen chartplotters or combo units, with a 10Hz GPS/GLONASS receiver for smooth on-scree navigation. These units expanded on Garmin’s popular 7” touchscreen units that were introduced in 2010, offering larger screen sizes and the latest features. The 742 and 942 are equipped with wireless connectivity for the Garmin mobile APP, connectivity to the Garmin Marine Network for easy data transfer, and NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 connectivity for autopilot, VHF, digital switching and other sensors.
The GPSMAP 1042xsv/1242xsv series offers 10” and 12” options with a sunlight-readable screen and keypad interface. The Keypad features a multi-function rotary knob that allows easy menu navigation even in rough water, as well as hotkeys that can be programmed for quick access to the user’s favorite features. The 1042xsv and 1242xsv offer the above mentioned features and capabilities of the 742 and 792, and are also equipped with built-in CHIRP sonar, CHIRP ClearVü and CHIRP SideVü.
Garmin’s new compact units offer a large range of solutions to boat owners and range from $799.99 to $1299.99.

A customer brought in his 16′ center console fishing/hunting boat for a stereo system, GPS navigation, SeaDek padding, and hidden lights around the boat.
This 18 foot G3 Johnboat came completely stock and wanted to take it to the Next Level. We started with the essential electronics, we went with a Humminbird Helix 5 sonar GPS fish finding system and chart plotter on the dash. Also on the dash we went with a Kicker bluetooth controller that powers two 4 inch Kicker marine speakers. On the Bow we went with the latest technology in trolling motors with the Motorguide Pinpoint GPS system. A few accessories like camo Swivel seats and accent lighting polished it off and made this John boat the baddest on the water.
You can see in the pictures that we have installed a Hummingbird GPS system right above the steering wheel. Then we installed the Kicker Audio system you can also see that was custom colored to resemble the rest of the woods look that the boat already had on. LED color changing lights are hidden up under the gunwale of the boat and in other spaces to add visibility at night when out, as well as makes for a great experience on the water. Finally, we scanned the boat and took the date to our cutter for the exact measurements of the green and tan SeaDek Non-Skid Surface to be applied.
SeaDek is a great padding and non-skid surface solution for marine and other outdoor applications like truck tailgates, steps, and more. We have the capability to have custom etching engraved in the material. See the picture to measure fish sizes right on the floor of the boat. That ruler is now part of the boat and a great tool to use when judging whether to keep or release your catch.
